In June, Espoo Ciné recommends the heart-warming film The Penguin Lessons.
Directed by Peter Cattaneo (The Full Monty) and written by Jeff Pope (Philomena), the film is based on a true story about an English professor’s personal and political awakening after he unexpectedly rescues a penguin from the ocean and has to take care of it during a cataclysmic period in Argentine history.
When teacher Tom Michell (Steve Coogan) saves a penguin that is stuck in an oil slick on the coast of Uruguay, he has no idea what to do. After cleaning the bird, he tries to return it to the ocean, but the penguin refuses to leave. Tom has no other choice but to smuggle it to the exclusive boys school in Argentina where he is teaching. Juan Salvador the penguin softens the hearts and transforms the lives of the people it meets—even that of cynical Tom.
The Penguin Lessons will be screened on Thursday 12 June at 17:15 in Kino Tapiola. Learn more and buy tickets here!

In the all-year Espoo Ciné recommends series, we screen unfulfilled loves and itches in the back of our heads; films that could have been screened at the festival but for which this has not been the case for one reason or another. As is characteristic of Espoo Ciné, these screenings will include new European cinema and subtle flames of passion. The series is organised in collaboration with Kino Tapiola.
