Espoo Ciné recommends: Calle Málaga — 7 May 2026 at Kino Tapiola

The May screening in the Espoo Ciné Recommends series is Calle Málaga, winner of the Audience Award at the Venice Film Festival. Tickets are on sale at Kino Tapiola's online store.

"Calle Málaga is a kind of Robinson Crusoe story: a resourceful old widow refuses to resign herself to a dreary nursing home, but instead gradually wriggles her way back into her old life. Carmen Maura's performance — dignified and full of zest for life in equal measure — hooks you into rooting for the protagonist's ingenious fight for a life on her own terms." Tytti Rantanen / Executive Director of Espoo Ciné

Maria Angeles, a 79-year-old Spanish woman, lives alone in Tangier, Morocco, and enjoys her daily routine. However, her life is turned upside down when her daughter arrives from Madrid to sell the apartment in which she has always lived. Determined to stay, she does everything she can to get her home and her belongings back and, unexpectedly, rediscovers love and sensuality.

Calle Málaga is the first Spanish-language film by award-winning Moroccan director Maryam Touzani. Touzani's previous film The Blue Caftan was Morocco's Oscar submission in 2022. The lead role in Calle Málaga is played by Carmen Maura, a legend of Spanish cinema and known as a longtime collaborator of Pedro Almodóvar.
