Crip Ciné 2024

The Crip Ciné programme focuses on disabled people both on screen and as filmmakers, exploring the theme of disability and encouraging new perspectives on it.

The 2024 directing team includes Sanni Myllyaho, Sanni Purhonen and Pinja Eskola. In 2023, the programme was awarded the Honorary Vimma by Kynnys, a human rights organization for people with disabilities.

Programme

Mon 26 Aug | Kino Regina

On Monday at 5:00 PM we'll kick off Crip Ciné 2024 with a short film screening, Crip Ciné in Motion. This Finnish short film screening paves the way from a medicalized and restrictive understanding of disability towards a celebration of free expression, movement, dance, and art. After the screening, there will be a discussion with the filmmakers lasting approximately 30 minutes. The discussion will be translated to sign language.

The evening concludes at 7:00 PM with Maria Montessori (screening 1/2), a heartfelt portrait of the woman who influenced the development of special education.

Tue 27 Aug | The Espoo Cultural Centre, Louhisali

On Tuesday, we'll present the Crip Ciné Gala Screening with a festival hit, The Ride Ahead. The film is a young man's journey towards independence, adulthood, and finding his own community. The screening starts at 5:15 PM in Louhisali. The film is in English, with subtitles in English for the d/Deaf and hard of hearing. There is also an English audio description available at the MovieReading app.

The evening continues at 7:15 PM with Simon of the Mountain (screening 1/2), winner of the Cannes Critics' Week Grand Prize.

Wed 28 Aug | Kino Tapiola

On Wednesday at 5:00 PM, there will be straight – but queer – talk about the sexuality of people with disabilities. Acsexybility (screening 1/2) is a Brazilian documentary film where normativity gives way to pleasure, fantasies, and sexual diversity.
