Panel discussion with Angelica Ruffier (La belle année) and Karin Pennanen (Days of Wonder).
How do deeply personal emotions and true stories become art? How to approach traces of someone else’s life? What is the relationship between documentary filmmaking, the personal essay, and autofiction?
This panel discussion takes inspiration from two films screening at Espoo Ciné: La Belle année by Swedish-French filmmaker Angelica Ruffier, which revisits the formative memories of a teenage crush, and Days of Wonder (Päivien lumo) by Karin Pennanen, in which the story and art of the director’s outsider artist uncle intertwine with Pennanen’s own journey to becoming an artist.
Joining the discussion are Angelica Ruffier, Karin Pennanen, and Anu Silfverberg, Managing Editor of Long Play, as well as an acclaimed journalist and essayist. The discussion will be moderated by Tytti Rantanen, Executive Director of Espoo Ciné. The discussion will be held in English.
La Belle année will be screened before the panel discussion at Kino Tapiola on Saturday, 22 August, at 2:00 pm.
Enchanted Days (Päivien lumo) will be screened at Kino Tapiola on Sunday, 23 August, at 2:00 pm.
