Young naive poet Lucien arrives to 19th century Paris alongside his upper-class lover and must quickly learn to get by when the relationship goes south, facing the judgement of the local high society. Money and happiness must be found elsewhere, and a career working for the most outrageous newspaper in town quickly sweeps the young artist off his feet.

Rarely has a literary classic received such a lively and enchanting adaptation as Balzac’s serial novel from 1837–1843 now has in the hands of director Xavier Giannoli. The six-time César-winning work whisks the audience away to a Parisian world of dashing costumes, biting social satire, romance, colorful characters and familiar faces (including Gérard Depardieu).
