Responsibility
Equality, Non-Discrimination and Accessibility
- Equality, non-discrimination, accessibility and diversity are embedded in all artistic and production planning at Espoo Ciné.
- The programme highlights minority groups, women directors, emerging filmmakers and themes related to human rights.
- We support minority groups and accessibility in film culture in particular through two key initiatives:
Crip Ciné promotes more sustainable representation of disability and showcases films by disabled filmmakers.
Sinun Ciné is an idea competition and workshop aimed at new filmmakers who identify with minority groups.
- Films in the Junior Ciné and Crip Ciné selections are subtitled in Finnish, and we produce descriptive subtitles where possible.
- We provide sign language interpretation for Crip Ciné discussions and filmmaker interviews.
- Information about the accessibility of screening venues and the films is available in one place on our website.
- Screenings at the Junior Ciné children’s and youth film festival are free of charge for schools in Espoo.
- Free tickets for Espoo Ciné screenings can be redeemed with the Kaiku Card. We also offer free side events and special screenings such as discussion events, the family day and the outdoor cinema. Ticket prices for Espoo Ciné screenings are reasonable compared to other film festivals in the Helsinki metropolitan area.
- We recruit people from diverse backgrounds and provide work opportunities also for early-career professionals.
- We offer an open, safe, confidential and contract-based working culture.
- Salaries follow industry recommendations within the limits of available resources.
- Espoo Ciné events follow the safer space principles of CultureEspoo, and the festival appoints two harassment contact persons.
- We collect feedback from audiences, volunteers, stakeholders, partners and staff.
- A key development goal is to increase financially accessible ticket options for different discount groups.
Environment
- We avoid unnecessary purchases and prioritise renting and recycling. Decoration materials and merchandise are designed for multiple years of use. We oppose disposable culture.
- Printed materials are produced only when necessary and using ecological production methods.
- Festival transport prioritises electric or hybrid vehicles.
- Espoo Ciné venues are accessible on foot, by bicycle or by public transport.
- Festival events offer seasonal, domestic vegetarian and vegan food. We aim to minimise and make use of food waste.
- A development goal is to reduce emissions from air travel, which currently stem from international guests and programme selection trips to international festivals. Emissions are offset where possible and where resources allow, but the primary aim is to reduce them altogether.
