Espoo Ciné Recommends: Vermiglio

The film, selected as Italy's Oscar nominee and awarded at the Venice Film Festival, takes the viewer to the year 1944. In a northern Italian mountain village, the threat of war feels distant, yet its shadow is ever-present. The life of a local family is turned upside down when Pietro (Giuseppe De Domenico), a deserter from the front, arrives in the village and falls in love with Lucia (Martina Scrinzi), the eldest of a ten-member sibling group. The changing seasons shape village life, and as the snow melts, the distant war finally comes to an end.

However, the post-war world brings new tensions as Pietro returns to his home in Sicily and the pregnant Lucia takes her fate into her own hands. Based on Maura Delpero’s own family history, Vermiglio is the director's ode to collective memory. The breathtakingly beautiful Alps provide a picturesque backdrop for a touching story of sacrifice, longing, and the family secrets smoldering beneath the surface.

Vermiglio is screened at Kino Tapiola on Thursday, 13 February, at 17:15. Get your tickets from Kino Tapiola's website!
