Outdoor Screenings at Espoo Ciné: My Neighbor Totoro & Once Upon a Time in a Forest

The free outdoor screenings at Espoo Ciné will delight audiences with films exploring the relationship between humans and nature. Family-friendly movies, My Neighbor Totoro and Once Upon a Time in a Forest, will be shown on consecutive Saturdays in Haukilahti and Tapiola. Come join us for an enchanting film evening under the stars!

My Neighbor Totoro

My Neighbor Totoro is the crown jewel of the Japanese anime studio Studio Ghibli and legendary director Hayao Miyazaki: one of the most beloved Japanese children's films ever. Set in the 1930s, the film tells the story of two sisters who move to a new home and, while exploring the nearby forest, discover a strange, furry creature, Totoro. Miyazaki's magical world has a childlike, wonder-filled perspective, and as the cat bus leaps over forests and rice fields, even the viewer's cynicism melts away. This deep and gentle anime avoids all the clichés of children's films and is justifiably loved by both children and adults.

My Neighbor Totoro is organized in collaboration with Skiffer Haukilahti on Saturday, 24 August at 21.30. The film will be shown at Haukilahti Marina in front of the Skiffer restaurant.

Espoo Ciné & Eloisa Espoo: Once Upon a Time in a Forest

On Espoo Day, Saturday, 31 August, Virpi Suutari's film Once Upon a Time in a Forest will be shown in Tapiola. Following five young forest activists – Ida, Minka, Otto, Ville, and Otso – the film takes viewers to snow-covered mountains, forest industry boardrooms, underwater scenes, and activists' tents where secrets are whispered into each other's ears. The discussions among the young people, along with the documentary's breathtakingly beautiful images, shake viewers into confronting the plight of our dwindling forest nature. At the same time, Suutari's humane approach gives the subject space to breathe.

The evening begins at 20.00 with a presentation by The Activist Grannies movement, discussing the impacts of the climate crisis on human health and well-being. The screening will take place at the Sun Terrace at Tapiola Wading Pool. This event is part of Eloisa Espoo, which aims to promote the well-being and diversity of nature through participatory activities for residents.

Admission to both events is free.
