Paris 1835. Frédéric Chopin is a piano virtuoso of the Paris salons and is favoured by high society. Yet behind the mask of a charmer, Chopin is melancholic and yearns for love. The decadent Paris nightlife and strenuous work schedule has taken its toll and Chopin falls ill with tuberculosis. He must make a choice: either to live a quiet life in the countryside with the feminist author George Sand or to devote himself entirely to his music. 

Chopin, a Sonata in Paris is the latest film by one of Poland’s powerhouse filmmakers, Michał Kwieciński, and is a biography film that focuses on the inner life of Chopin and his music.

The film focuses on Chopin’s inner world with sound design that immerses the viewer in the soundscape that Chopin creates. No wonder then, that the film has won accolades at the Polish film academy award “Orły” for its sound design, among costume design, production design and makeup. This visually sumptuous film also won the Camerimage Bronze Frog for cinematography by Michał Sobociński. Highly acclaimed Polish pianist Thomas Ritterz plays Chopin’s piano concertos and improvisations as well as the master himself.
