This modern retelling of Shakespeare's classic transplants the tragic love story to Verona Beach, while keeping the original language intact. Romeo and Juliet (young Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio) fall for each other through the glass of a fish tank as an iconic mid-90s pop soundtrack plays in the background. Swords have become guns as the Montagues and Capulets go head to head, hurtling toward the inevitable ending everyone already knows, cut together with the pace and punch of a music video.
To mark its 30th anniversary, William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet will be screened outdoors at WeeGee, itself celebrating its 20th anniversary. Bring a blanket and wrap yourself in soft nostalgia as the late-summer evening fades to dark. The film will be screened as a 35 mm analogue copy.
