After living in Finland for more than a decade, Sibiry Konate, a dancer and choreographer, finds himself longing for a deeper connection with his home village. His sense of belonging is complicated by the duality of a migrant’s identity and the contrasting realities of his two home countries. In Finland, Sibiry is a marginalized African immigrant, while in his home village in Burkina Faso he is seen as a privileged European, expected to succeed and to send money back home. Seeking to reconnect with his home village, Sibiry decides to ship a valuable gift to West Africa in hopes that it will help the whole village.

Silent Legacy continues the politically engaged filmmaking of the award-winning directors Jenni Kivistö and Jussi Rastas and offers a palpable depiction of migration, colonialism, and the realities of global inequality. Near the end of the film, the focus shifts to the European filmmakers themselves, examining how their presence inevitably shapes the documented reality.
