A mysterious ship that disappeared thirty years earlier appears in the harbour of a fishing village long past its prime. For the few who still remember, it is a sign. The Rose of Nevada must go back to sea; perhaps then the ruined village’s luck will turn. Nick (
George MacKay) signs on to the boat in order to support his young family. Also Liam (
Callum Turner), a recent arrival in the village who is desperate to escape his past, is joining the crew. Returning from a successful fishing trip, the young men realize that nothing is quite as it was. They have slipped back in time, and the villagers greet them as if they were the original crew from decades ago.
As in his earlier works (
Bait, Enys Men), director
Mark Jenkin creates an enigmatic, time-worn atmosphere for a film that blends time travel, ghost story and melancholy drama. This mystery film reflects on loss, guilt and communal memory: the past never fully disappears, but quite literally returns with the waves.
