The young Helsinki artists were on the cutting edge of the times when they founded the Helsinki Film Workshop, focusing broadly on experimental film. The launch coincided with a time when similar workshops were starting to emerge elsewhere in Europe. There are already over 70 artist-led film labs open to everyone in different parts of the world today. If HEP were still alive, it would be one of the oldest. The founders were a group of artists interested in making moving images from a wide range of fields, from theatre to film and visual arts.

During the depression in Finland, there was little money, but rents were low and subcultures flourished. The development of video slowly began to free up analogue equipment for artists to use.

It is fascinating to see how handmade film quickly began to find new forms in the hands of the workshop artists and expand towards installation art, or how they pushed the methods of conceptual art into the presentation practices of the so-called “big-screen-movies”.

HEP served as inspiration for the legendary Independent Imaging Retreat Film Farm, co-founded by Philip Hoffman and Marian McMahon 1994 in Canada, Moun Forest in Ontario – we will also be able to visit there in the screening we are seeing now.

Curated by film artist Milja Viita.
