Good Boy

Tommy (Anson Boon) is a 19-year-old petty criminal whose days consist of drugs, partying, violence and causing commotion. It all comes to an end when, one night, he gets into an argument with his friend and continues alone into the night. The next morning, Tommy wakes up chained up in the basement of a remote country house. The only people allowed on the premises are the members of a small family and their housemaid. The dysfunctional couple, Chris (Stephen Graham) and Kathryn (Andrea Riseborough), have kidnapped Tommy in order to rehabilitate him into a ”good boy”, who can serve as a brother figure to their obedient son Jonathan (Kit Rakusen). Tommy plans to escape but finds help difficult to come by.

Good Boy is a brilliant genre blender. It begins with the premise of a horror film, before evolving into a slow-burn thriller and, ultimately, a twisted family drama. The gloomy atmosphere is balanced by a heavy dose of dark comedy.

The Polish director Jan Komasa is operating in familiar territory with this film. His best-known film to date, Corpus Christi, also follows a delinquent young man.
