Six-year-old Maja lives a simple yet idyllic life with her parents in 1990s Yugoslavia amid rising political tensions. The family struggles to survive, so when the opportunity to move to Denmark arises, Maja and her parents leave Yugoslavia in search for a better future. Maja’s two older brothers have to be left behind, and the new life is far from a Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale. The family is torn between two countries, and it isn’t easy to hold on to loved ones or one’s identity in the midst of a major change.

Marijana Jankovic’s debut feature, inspired by her own life and the experiences shared by others. The film brilliantly captures a child’s perspective on such a difficult situation and the ability to adapt even when facing responsibilities far beyond her years.
