The Loneliest Man in Town

Blues musician Al Cook lives in his memory-filled flat, isolated from the world around him. When his home is condemned for demolition, the ageing musician is forced to consider what is left for him in life. Along the way, the viewer encounters a cast of colourful and distinctive characters who, with their gentle humour, enrich Cook’s story.

This humane and moving film traces the life story of Al Cook (played by veteran musician Alois Koch in real life) through memories, encounters and music. Carefully selected songs from Koch’s repertoire carry the viewer through a long and significant career on the Austrian blues scene.

The award-winning directing duo Tizza Covi and Rainer Frimmel continue their distinctive style, in which documentary authenticity and fiction can also merge seamlessly. Elegant scenes shot on 16mm film create a timeless atmosphere that at times calls to mind the understated world of Aki Kaurismäki’s films.
