The drama follows decisive moments in the lives of people in a small Finnish town. In the marketplace, people jump from a bungee platform; somewhere, people fall in love; elsewhere, they part ways, feel shame, face death and new life. The story unfolds in the tensions between parallel narratives: a perfectly ordinary Saturday morning that sends several lives in unexpected directions, even as the town carries on.
Joki was one of the most eagerly anticipated Finnish films of its year that went on to screen at many international festivals. Winner of five Jussi Awards, The River was praised by film professionals, but it did not reach a wide audience. This anniversary screening offers a new opportunity to discover it.
