Drawing inspiration from great literature, Argentinian director Milagros Mumenthaler’s The Currents brings its own twist to Cortázar-esque depiction of everyday strangeness. 34-year-old Lina is a fashion designer who gets rewarded for her work in Switzerland. However, she decides to jump into a river under incomprehensible impulse but is saved at the last minute. Lina returns to Argentina where she reunites with her husband and young daughter. Nevertheless, returning seems impossible as something in her has changed strangely.

The Currents is a calmly progressing, ambiguous mystery in the best Argentinian fashion. It isn’t afraid to stop at narrative sidepaths or atmospheric scenic routes. Everyday life is portrayed as distressing and lonely, but occasionally the puzzling mundane details take control of the camera gently. Feminist undertones smoulder in the background as Mumenthaler subtly depicts Lina’s alienation from the roles of motherhood and wifehood.
