Grown up in an all-inclusive hotel, long-estranged half sisters Lily (Renate Reinsve) and Diana (Helene Bjørnebye) return to their childhood island when their eccentric mother dies in unusual circumstances. The siblings inherit a half-finished esoteric retreat center, which leads them on a metamorphic journey where they have to confront the past, each other, and the alternate realities of Gran Canaria.

Butterfly depicts painful issues with a dark undertone, but humor constantly leaks through. The film’s quirky characters, intense pace and alternating Canarian locations create an irresistible road movie atmosphere. Beneath the absurd situations, glitter and rubber dildos lies a portrait of a nurturing community and the contradictions that are inherently a part of human relations. Colorful and tragicomic Butterfly does an excellent job examining the tragic disorder produced by contemporary society, complex family relations, and life in all its shades.
