Rays and Shadows
Les rayons et des ombres
Jean Luchaire and Otto Abetz are ardent pacifists and inseparable friends but World War II makes their countries into enemies once more. However, Jean becomes Otto's right hand man, when the latter is appointed as an ambassador in Paris. Together the men believe they can protect France from the most destructive visions of Nazi leaders. However, personal ambitions and the temptations of Parisian bacchanalia are fueled by the embassy’s abundant funds putting their ideals to the test.
In France,
Rays and Shadows’ depiction of the German occupiers and their French collaborators has garnered both controversy and praise. Established European stars
Jean Dujardin and
August Diehl are complemented by
Nastya Golubeva’s promising performance as Jean’s daughter Corinne. Refusing both condemnation and apology, the film sheds light on the vast human complexity often masked behind the words “wrong side of history”.
