Redoubt

Värn

A familiar face to every festival attendant, Denise Lavant (Holy Motors, Beau Travail) stars in Swedish director John Skoog’s film as a farmer who decides to prepare for the possibility of war.

The film opens memorably with Swedish Cold War-era civil defense instruction on how people should act in the event of war. This frames the entire film, reinforced by striking black-and-white cinematography. The atmosphere is suitably unsettling for such a serious subject.

Lavant’s character decides to follow the instructions to protect his home and neighbors, which causes confusion within the local community. Redoubt raises questions about social norms and what constitutes legitimate preparation. Although the protagonist clearly takes the instructions too literally, he is nevertheless acting in accordance with the official government guidance. In today’s unstable world, the film’s themes may hit uncomfortably close to home at times.
