The Blood Countess is a characteristic work by the maverick filmmaker, visual artist, and iconoclast Ulrike Ottinger. She is known for reimagining iconic figures such as Dorian Gray and Joan of Arc while having a fresh and unflinching perspective on them. The film is a reinvention of the vampire myth. Ottinger co-wrote the screenplay with Nobel-awarded Austrian author Elfriede Jelinek, reuniting Jelinek with Huppert for the first time since The Piano Teacher.
