Mar’s estranged mother passes away and she finds her way out of Malta by selling off the three plots of farmland she inherited. Mar’s greedy relatives contest her claim, but she decides to fight it. By chance she meets Nenu, an 80-year old folk singer, who opens Mar to culture and emotions that she has tried to run away from.

Alex Camilleri’s second feature film Zejtune touches upon themes of finding your way in the world, gentrification and impoverishment of culture. The film emphasizes the discovery of an unexpected connection between the past and the present through one's own language, culture, and music. Michela Farrugia as Mar and real life music legend Nenu “il-Brazz” Borg as the quick-witted veteran folk singer shine in this sincere film.

Featuring real Maltese folk artists and the set against Malta’s stunning landscapes, Zejtune is a heartfelt ode to the power of music.
