Seen through the eyes of a chicken fleeing for its life, the human-built world looks very different. The camera, almost as curious as the chicken itself, follows our feathered protagonist from one danger and mishap to the next. Forced to adapt to the human world, the chicken encounters both cruelty and kindness from other species. Carried forward by its musical narrative, the story eventually leads to a henhouse at a rural Greek taverna, where nothing is quite as it seems.

In György Pálfi’s post-humanist fable, the parallel lives of humans and animals intertwine while remaining fundamentally separate; after all, people and chickens hold very different ideas about how chickens ought to live. Unflinching yet thought-provoking, the film invites us to reflect on what both humans and chickens are willing to do in pursuit of a better life – or simply to stay alive.
