Last Movies

What does it mean for a work to be someone's last?

Rather than searching for definitive answers, Stanley Schtinter's Last Movies wanders through cinema, popular culture and history, reflecting on the final public gestures of filmmakers, actors, musicians and political figures. What did Charlie Chaplin or Stanley Kubrick see before dying? Blending archival footage and essayistic narration, the film transforms endings into a meditation on memory, spectatorship and the traces we leave behind.

One of its most haunting moments reflects on Jean-Luc Godard's final day: "He was not sick, he was simply exhausted." As the narrator (Jeremy Irons) recalls: “Godard finished his final unfinished film, returned to his desk, smoked his last cigar and left for the assisted dying facility. Before he ingested the poison, before he died, he watched us watching him."
