In her sophomore feature, director Laura Wandel follows the example set by the Dardenne brothers and continues in the thematic terrain defined by her critically acclaimed debut Playground (2021), which also explored children subjected to the exercise of power. This time, the focus is on adults who have to navigate the web of merciless bureaucracy and social structures. Adam’s Sake opened the Critics’ Week section at the Cannes Film Festival.
Nurse Lucy (Léa Drucker) does her best to help paroled single mother Rebecca (Anamaria Vartolomei) stay with her son, but Rebecca’s fear of losing her child and mistrust of the authorities make helping her difficult.
In addition to the intimate, human story, Wandel manages to create a perceptive and empathetic portrait of the realities of people working in the public sector and the anguish of ordinary people struggling with the system.
