C’est si bon! tells the story of French cinema’s iconic couple, Simone Signoret (Marina Foïs) and Yves Montand (Roschdy Zem), focusing on the final years of their relationship. The couple was together for over thirty years until Signoret’s death — despite Montand’s numerous affairs, the most famous of which was with Marilyn Monroe.
Directed by Diane Kurys, the film explores their life together from Signoret’s perspective. She refuses to portray herself as a victim, but nonetheless suffers deeply from Montand’s repeated infidelities, often with much younger women. The imbalance in their relationship is further exacerbated by the entertainment industry’s double standards: while Montand’s career continues steadily, Signoret struggles to find fulfilling roles as she ages.
C’est si bon! is an intimate and nuanced portrait of a long-term relationship where love, disappointment, and connection are interwoven across decades. As Signoret says in the film, in a relationship, there is often “one who is bored — and one who suffers.”
The film was screened at this year’s Cannes Film Festival in the Cannes Classics section.
