Outsider Art Festival x Espoo Ciné – Welcome Unwelcomes

The film programme of OAF is organised in collaboration with Espoo Ciné. This year’s short film screening offers a diverse selection of film: animation, performance and finally black comedy in black and white. Films will be screened on Tuesday 19th of August at Kino Tapiola and on Sunday 24th of August at Louhisali. The screening on Tuesday 19th August at Kino Tapiola includes Kalevi Helvetti's and Satu and Maima Tani's performances in addition to short films.
The screening starts with Kenyan-born Doreen Mwrigi’s beautiful animation that combines clay and paintings. Paula’s House is a growth story that represents the still rare Kenyan queer film. The awkwardness of meetings becomes art in Samra Šabanović’s film I Need to Tell You Something. Unwelcome directed by Tommi Kainulainen takes questions of being outsider and belonging to mythical levels. Organisation for experimental folk music Folk Extreme and Teatteri NEO have created and urban minimusical of the social struggles of Lemminkäinen, the reckless hero of Kalevala.
It is advisable to take a brake in-between other films and relax in the embrace of Jari Nordström’s sauna-themed film Tough Finnish Man. The mythological world continues in the film by young artists Haus & Nipsu, Silvanus, in which a wild forest god Silvanus suffers from cutting and taming of the forest. Psydopia by Hannes Renvall and Litterator by Niklas Röholm lead the viewer from the forest to the often frustrating jungle of telecommunications and encounters and mismatches between human and artificial intelligence.
