The Young Girls of Rochefort

Les Demoiselles de Rochefort

Paris is a small town for those who share a great passion. Rochefort is even smaller than Paris, yet would-be lovers twirl past one another in its streets during an intense summer weekend. An annual fair brings in town traveling performers, sailors, strangers, drifters, poets… in short: a whole lot of bustle!

In the middle of it all are the charming twins Delphine and Solange, played by real-life sisters Catherine Deneuve and Françoise Dorléac, both longing for a bit of that excitement in their hearts. The rest of the cast is equally dazzling: Michel Piccoli as the wistful piano shop owner Simon Dame, the twins’ mother played by Danielle Darrieux (the only cast member to sing her own songs), the baby-faced Jacques Perrin — and, of course, the delightful American stars Gene Kelly and Georges Chakiris.

At the heart of Jacques Demy’s sun-drenched musical fantasy are the irresistible melodies of Michel Legrand, and the vibrant production design of Bernard Evein, who had the town’s facades painted in candy colors just for the film. A perfect choice for a summer date on Espoo Day!
