The Portuguese House

Una quinta portuguesa

Fernando is a middle aged geography teacher whose life loses direction after his wife leaves to her home country Serbia without saying a word. Troubled with countless questions, Fernando goes for a seaside vacation to Portugal where a bizarre chain of events leads him to become a gardener under the name of a different man.

This provides us with an interesting idea. What would it be like to wipe the slate clean and start a new life as someone else? Spanish writer-director Avelina Prat’s second feature film The Portuguese House ponders on the indefinitely complex themes of family and identity and how all this is tied to personal, communal and national histories. Manolo Solo and Maria de Medeiros excel in leading roles.
