When one hears the word surrealism, names like Salvador Dalí and Luis Buñuel's Un Chien Andalou (1929) come to mind, but it is also deeply woven into the films of David Lynch and Anna Eriksson. Known for his career in music, Herra Ylppö’s directorial debut Kronos Kairos is a surrealist journey through the ruins of a broken relationship—soaked in science fiction, dark humor, and existential melancholy. The film unfolds amid the dramatic mountain landscapes of Andalusia, captured in exceptionally striking black-and-white cinematography.
Mira Luoti plays a woman who tells her husband (Toni Järvinen) that she’s leaving him, having found someone new. The abandoned man doesn’t respond with words but spirals into the shadowy depths of his disturbed mind—is there any way back? Drawing from Herra Ylppö’s personal experiences and his background in directing music videos, the film is a delightfully visual experience where the mind finds rest among majestic imagery.
Kronos and Kairos are two ancient Greek concepts of time, describing it in very different ways. Kronos refers to measurable time, while Kairos refers to qualitative time.
