Uncompromising in vision and fiercely independent, Rax Rinnekangas is one of Finland’s most resolute auteurs — a filmmaker who has never once bowed to commercial demands. Jukebox, his latest work, unfolds across wintry Spanish landscapes and deserted village streets.
It's a modern road movie, inspired by Nobel laureate Peter Handke’s Versuch über die Jukebox, in which Rinnekangas continues his signature essayistic and culture-critical style — this time with music and memory in starring roles. The film explores the cultural significance of the jukebox — that dusty music machine once relegated to the corner of every tavern — and its profound power to awaken memories, stir emotion, and shape identity.
Visually, Jukebox is meditative, built on long silences and poetic landscapes that create space for reflection. Music is not mere ambiance, but the very soul of the film: the songs played by the jukebox open doors to the past and craft the internal landscape of the protagonist.
Featuring Brontis Jodorowsky and Nora Armani, the actors do not perform in the conventional manner of narrative drama. Instead, they serve as vessels for philosophical themes. Dialogue is sparse — yet each word is chosen with care.
