Espoo Cin\u00e9 will once again take place at its traditional time at the end of August. The 2025 edition of the festival will be held from August 22nd to 31st, and the first programme highlights are now being revealed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
New Finnish films are a core part of Espoo Cin\u00e9. This year\u2019s featured Finnish gala film is El\u00e4m\u00e4 on juhla<\/em>, written and directed by Ulla Heikkil\u00e4<\/strong>. Filmed in Nauvo, the movie tells the story of the Eerola family\u2019s midsummer celebration in the archipelago\u2014after which nothing will ever be the same. The cast includes Pirjo Lonka<\/strong>, Jani Volanen<\/strong>, Aamu Milonoff<\/strong>, and Jussi Vatanen<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Also part of this year\u2019s lineup is Jossain on valo joka ei sammu<\/em>, the debut feature by Lauri-Matti Parppei<\/strong>, which captivated audiences in the ACID section at the Cannes Film Festival. Filmed in Rauma, the film is a delicate tribute to friendship and collaborative creativity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n From the festival\u2019s core European film selection comes The 47 \u2013 El 47<\/em> by Spanish director Marcel Barrena<\/strong>. Based on a true story, the film tells of a bus driver who hijacked Barcelona\u2019s line 47 bus and helped shape the city\u2019s modern identity during the boom of the 1970s. The 47<\/em> is the most successful Catalan film to date and won five Goya Awards, the Spanish equivalent of the Oscars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Espoo Cin\u00e9 also features documentaries, such as Riefenstahl<\/em> by Andreas Veiel<\/strong>. The film explores Leni Riefenstahl<\/strong>\u2019s journey from being the Nazis\u2019 trusted filmmaker to becoming a photographer, questioning whether she herself was a Nazi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n On Espoo Day, August 30, 2025, an outdoor screening will be held in collaboration with the Exhibition Centre WeeGee. The film will be Jacques Demy<\/strong>\u2019s musical classic The Young Girls of Rochefort,<\/em> starring Catherine Deneuve<\/strong>, her sister Fran\u00e7oise Dorl\u00e9ac<\/strong>,Gene Kelly<\/strong>, and Michel Piccoli<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This year, Espoo Cin\u00e9 is collaborating with the Outsider Art Festival (OAF).
