The award is given annually to an individual or entity that has contributed to promoting Finnish film culture.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to the jury, composed of members of the festival\u2019s board, Birn is known as a versatile and adaptable artist whose performances have been enjoyed both on intimate small stages and through streaming services.<\/p>\n<p>A graduate of the Theatre Academy, Birn has been at the forefront of Finnish cinema for over twenty years. She has appeared in films such as <em>Helmi\u00e4 ja sikoja<\/em> (Pearls and Pigs), <em>Puhdistus<\/em> (Purge), <em>Helene<\/em>, <em>Void<\/em>, as well as the television series <em>Munkkivuori<\/em>. Internationally, Birn has been seen in <em>The Ones Below<\/em>, the series <em>Foundation<\/em>, and the Hollywood film <em>The Crow<\/em>, which premiered today. Throughout her career, Birn has also been awarded the State Prize for Cinema and the Jussi Award for Best Actress. Additionally, the short film <em>Two Bodies on a Beach<\/em>, co-written by Birn and <strong>Anna Paavilainen<\/strong>, won the Jussi Award for Best Short Film in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The Espoo Cin\u00e9 Award is presented annually to a person or entity that promotes Finnish film culture towards a diverse European identity. The award, first presented in 2021, was won last year by the production company Elokuvayhti\u00f6 Aamu.<\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow, Saturday 24 August, at 12:00, Kino Tapiola will host a tribute screening featuring Laura Birn\u2019s films <em>Void <\/em>and <em>Two Bodies on a Beach<\/em>. After the screening, at 14:00, Birn will visit Kino\u2019s terrace to discuss her acting career. She will be interviewed by <strong>Nunnu Karppinen<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Your Cin\u00e9 Idea Competition Winner: Yasmin Najjar<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The winner of the Your Cin\u00e9 competition, which is intended for emerging filmmakers, was also awarded at today&#8217;s opening ceremony. The 2024 Your Cin\u00e9 Award was won by <strong>Yasmin Najjar<\/strong> with her idea <em>TJ 86<\/em>. Additionally, Hasina Fahim and Bella Meer with the idea <em>Mamuh\u00e4\u00e4t<\/em> as well as <strong>Mukhtar Abdi<\/strong> and <strong>Zakariya Noor<\/strong> with the idea <em>Karpe Diem<\/em> were recognised with honourable mentions.<\/p>\n<p>The jury of Your Cin\u00e9 2024 consists of <strong>Juha Elom\u00e4ki <\/strong>(Distributor at Pirkanmaan elokuvakeskus), <strong>Taito Kawata <\/strong>(director, for example Netflix series Dance Brothers), <strong>Emilia Haukka<\/strong> (Producer at Aamu Film Company) and <strong>Veera Ojola <\/strong>(Producer at Yle Draama).<\/p>\n<p>Your Cin\u00e9 is an Espoo Cin\u00e9 initiative aimed at promoting diversity in cinema, specifically targeting people underrepresented in the Finnish media landscape.
