In Search of Afro-European Cinema

This year, Espoo Ciné presents a programme of Afroeuropean cinema at Kannusali in Espoo Centre. The programme features both Afroeuropean and Euro-African co-productions, as well as a free screening of a short film by one of Senegal’s most renowned directors, Djibril Diop Mambéty. 

What kinds of films from the African continent make their way into a Western film culture dominated by American and European perspectives? How is “Afroeuropeanness” already present in European cinema — and how should it be — as part of the way society and reality are portrayed?

Before the discussion, Jenni Kivistö and Jussi Rastas’s documentary Silent Legacy (Katseiden alla) will be screened. The film explores identity, migration and the legacy of colonialism. The filmmakers will join the discussion, which will be moderated by journalist Kaisa Viitanen.
