Hasna and Mariam are young sisters of Moroccan background living in the suburbs of Paris. The inseparable girls are separated from each other after running away from home. Hasna, who ends up in a foster family, dreams of being a gun-wielding western hero, the kind that takes care of herself. Later, grown-up Hasna has lost not only her sister but also her identity, unable to find her place as a rootless Arab woman in France. She reconnects with a childhood friend who seems to have the answer to her feelings of being an outsider.
Journalist Dina Amer’s debut film is a powerful look into a life behind the headlines, bold in both its subject and its approach. Spike Lee and Riz Ahmed, among others, served as executive producers on the true-life drama.
