The new film by the visionary director Eduardo Casanova tells an impressive story about a toxic relationship between a mother and her son. Pedro Almodóvar meets Derek Jarman as Casanova splashes powerful colors, mainly in shades of pink, onto the screen, creating a dramatically staged drama around an overprotective mother (Ángela Molina) who meticulously takes care of her twenty-something son Mateo (Manel Llunell). The mother-son relationship becomes increasingly intense, even likened to the merciless dictatorship of North Korea. Skillfully alternating between beauty and horror, love and hate, Casanova crafts a fantastical world.
