The Girls Are Alright is a portrait of five actresses who retreat to a serene Spanish village to work on a new project. Unlike the play the women have come to rehearse, this delicately composed ensemble-piece is less about dramatic plot-twists than it is about heartwarmingly ordinary everyday life and the self-discovery that comes with it.
The film cleverly merges traditional drama with techniques of observational documentary, even naming each character after the actor playing them. Combining hazy summer landscape and visuals inspired by the romantic era with delightful comedy and touching dialogue, the debut film of multi-talented director Itsaso Arana creates a genuine depiction of modern femininity and artistic exploration.
