F:ACT Award nominee at Copenhagen’s CPH:DOX documentary film festival, Can’t Feel Nothing starts with a personal note: everyday use of social media has alienated director David Borenstein from his feelings. The filmmaker embarks on a trip around the world and asks how social media affects how we experience our feelings and whether we will experience them at all soon. Uncomfortable, a tad sad yet hilarious in its absurdity, Can’t Feel Nothing becomes an investigation of social media as a new industry of emotions as it navigates between dog influencers of the United States, female streamers of China, and propagandists of the Russian Federation, among other unforgettable characters. The overall state of things looks grim, but Borenstein’s film offers a unique and informative moment to question critically one’s relationship to media as it proves how social media and its users work as manipulators of emotions.
