In the complicit romance with her co-worker, Kimura, Wakato had found a soothing solution to the deathly but frictionless withering of her married life. Her lover’s accidental death brutally brings her back to the impasses of her marriage and to a grief that she has to both hide and confront. A whole world to rebuild, gestures to rethink, still recent memories to put in order without faltering. But how can it be otherwise? The turmoil triggered by this unfathomable shock wave is what finally compels Wakato to face up to her situation rather than seek refuge in the little arrangements that her feelings for Kimura had formerly justified. But nothing can work without a few limp spasms, and it is the precision with which Takuya Kato portrays these that gives his characters the chance to project themselves.
