On 8 May, the Espoo Ciné Recommends series presents Den svenska torpeden, a Swedish film based on an inspiring true story from the 1930s.
Den svenska torpeden tells the inspiring true story of the determined Sally Bauer, who defied the norms of her time in pursuit of her dream to swim across the English Channel on the eve of war. The film also features Jussi Award-winning actress Seidi Haarla in a supporting role.
World War II is sweeping across Europe, but a Swedish mother's mind is focused on just one thing — the ocean. Sally has always dreamed of crossing the English Channel, but an unplanned pregnancy in 1930s Sweden forces her to conform to the restrictive gender norms of the time. She falls into deep despair, until finally an opportunity arises for her to challenge society's expectations and chase her dream. However, as a single mother and a woman, she must pay a high price for pursuing her ambition.
Den svenska torpeden is screened at Kino Tapiola on Thursday, 8 May at 17:15. Get your tickets from Kino Tapiola's website!
