Espoo Ciné Recommends: Bird

On 13 March, Espoo Ciné’s Recommendation Screening presents Bird, a delicate and extraordinary coming-of-age story by Oscar-winning director Andrea Arnold.

Tomboy Bailey (Nykiya Adams) struggles to defend her own space and boundaries in a restless environment: father Bug (Barry Keoghan) is focused on finding music pure enough to make a toad secrete hallucinogens, while also preparing for a wedding. Meanwhile Bailey's mother is trapped in a new relationship, stuck between a rock and a hard place. Friends are starting to drift into a life of crime. Out in the fields, Bailey encounters a mysterious figure known as Bird (Franz Rogowski). Is he from this world or some kind of modern-day Karlsson-on-the-Roof?

A torchbearer of modern British realism, Andrea Arnold’s latest film, Bird, dares to take flight beyond the solid ground of everyday realism. It makes you both laugh at "sincerity" and recognize its strength. After watching this film, you’ll hear Blur and Coldplay with fresh ears! And you might just feel like continuing the night with karaoke...

Bird is screened at Kino Tapiola on Thursday, 13 March, at 17:15. Get your tickets from Kino Tapiola's website!

Espoo Ciné Recommends is Espoo Ciné’s year-round screening series in collaboration with Kino Tapiola. The series features Espoo Ciné’s unrealized loves; films that could have been part of the festival but, for one reason or another, didn't make it. The lineup promises Espoo Ciné's signature blend of new European cinema and subtly smoldering emotional intensity.
