Consent
Le consentement
Screenings
Paris in the 1980s still lives in the atmosphere liberated by the 1960s: it is forbidden to forbid. What does consent mean, then, and who can give it? During a dinner party, teenager Vanessa (Kim Higelin) catches the eye of a famed author G (Jean-Paul Rouve). The girl is first flattered and excited to be chosen as the muse of a genius – and soon, his lover. When G gradually breaks Vanessa's will and minimises her self, the girl awakes as if from a dream: behind the seductive words, there is a pattern of systematic abuse, in which the young person is only flesh and literary material.
Vanessa Springora's autobiographical book Consent contributed to the real start of the #MeToo debate in France in spring 2020. Since then, the dark legacy of sexualisation and abuse of children and young people has also been addressed in the film industry. Vanessa Filho's adaptation of Springora's book became a box office phenomenon when French teens started posting on TikTok the strong reactions the film evoked.
