Screenings
Ellias Barnès is about to start as the artistic director of a fashion house in Paris when he hears of his father's sudden death. Ellias travels to Montreal, the hometown from which he once managed to sever his ties. While sorting out the estate, Ellias becomes entangled in his father's legacy, whose blood-chilling nature gradually begins to dawn on him.
Director Xavier Legrand examines the suffocating grip of patriarchy with a cold and controlled approach, illustrating how escaping its grasp seems impossible and how it forces individuals into a spiral that spans generations. Influenced by 20th-century Hollywood genre films and ancient Greek tragedies, the protagonist's torment is skillfully constructed, forming a hypnotic labyrinth reminiscent of The Shining. The Successor is a provocative meditation on violence, a vortex that consumes its viewer alive.
