31st Espoo Ciné, held from 2nd to 6th September, presents a colourful and fresh variety of new European films and a few gems outside Europe. Festival program and schedule will be announced on Tuesday 11th August and tickets are available on 12th August.
One of the most awaited premieres of Espoo Ciné is The Personal History of David Copperfield, Armando Ianucci’s (The Death of Stalin etc.) fresh adaptation of Charles Dickens novel. The story of David Copperfield is fun and surprising story of quirky twists of destiny. The film is starred by Dev Patel, Tilda Swinton, Hugh Laurie, Peter Capaldi and Ben Whishaw, and screenplay is written by Iannucci and
Simon Blackwell (tv-series Succession).
Thursday 27th August will be the head start for the Espoo Ciné festival as a new Finnish drama There Will Be Spring is seen at Kino Tapiola. Annika Grof’s film is a heart-rending story of a young woman’s forbidden love and wounds of war in 1940s Finland.
After the official festival dates, on 7th September, Kino Tapiola is filled with night of music and film, as a celebration of the 250th anniversary of Beethoven. Yaron Zilberman’s film A Late Quartet (2012) is inspired and structured around the Beethoven String Quartet No. 14. The screening of A Late Quartet is followed by Kamus Quartet performing this Beethoven’s piece.
The films for children and youth is presented as it's own entirety, at Junior Ciné from 2nd to 4th September. The Junior Ciné program offers hope-filled stories of finding one’s place in the world and the importance of family and friends.
The festival venues are Kino Tapiola, Finnkino Sello and Finnkino Omena in Espoo, and Cinema Orion and Kino Regina in Helsinki. This year’s autumn festival is one-time only occasion since Espoo Ciné will be held next year in its regular place in the beginning of May.
