Espoo Ciné starts tomorrow

The festival programme presents a selection of films from France, German, Great Britain, Spain and Italy alongside films from smaller European countries like Ukraine, Slovakia, Belgium, Switzerland and Poland and naturally from Finland and other Scandinavian countries. This year’s festival emphasizes themes such as new beginnings, love and optimism.

Gala films

One of the most appreciated European film makers Christian Petzold’s romantic new film Undine opens the festival. The Finnish film gala selection is Virpi Suutari’s new documentary Aalto. Ville Jankeri’s Forest Giant is screened at the Parade place on Friday the 4th September and Marco Bellocchio’s mafia drama based on true events, The Traitor, closes the festival on Sunday the 6th September.

Junior Ciné (2.–4.9.) presents a versatile selection of films from all over Europe. The opening selection is German Rocca, a fun film about a girl called Rocca, helping others, friendship – and squirrels. This year’s Junior Ciné deals with themes such as friendship, finding your own path and having your family to support you when things get rough.

Stars from around the world

The master of intelligent comedy, Armando Iannucci's new adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic novelThe Personal History of David Copperfield brings out a stunning star cast from Dev Patel to Tilda Swinton, Hugh Laurie, Peter Capaldi and Ben Whishaw. Alice Winocour’s Proxima tells the story of an astronaut and single mom, brilliantly presented by Eva Green, accompanied by her nasty colleague played by Matt Dillon. Scandinavian stars include Stellan Skarsgård in an impressive role in Out Stealing Horses and wonderfully quirky and rough Wildland with the stunning Sidse Babette Knudsen. The French icons Anouk Aimée and Jean-Louis Trintignant bring back their classic characters from Claude Lelouch’s A Man and a Woman in the director’s new film The Best Years of a Life, both screened at Espoo Ciné.

Ticket sales and safety instructions

We recommend buying tickets online in advance to avoid close contact. On the website screening tickets can be purchased through the introduction pages of the films. The tickets can be ordered online or they can be collected from any Espoo Ciné ticket counter. Tickets are sold only for 50% capacity so there's enough seats to maintain a safe distance to others – please choose your seat accordingly. Our staff will help you with the optimal seating if necessary. Screening halls are cleaned after every screening, and the event venues will be sanitized frequently during the screenings.

Welcome to enjoy the films, safely and together!
